Overview
Sheep Ranch began life as a different Sheep Ranch in the early 2000s, a rag-tag, cross-country, 13-hole course with no irrigation built by Tom Doak on a bluff just north of what would later become Old Macdonald. It was a little-used recreation that only insiders knew about. Mike Keiser tapped Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to convert it into Bandon Dunes’ fifth regulation 18-hole course and Coore and Crenshaw’s second. Spread across an open, windswept plateau, using many of the same greensites, Coore managed to triangulate the holes in such a way that nine now touch the cliff edge along the Pacific Ocean. Extremely wide fairways and large putting surfaces allow the exposed course to be playable in extreme winds, and with its fast arrival to the top 15 public courses alongside Bandon’s other courses, Sheep Ranch has accomplished the most difficult of feats for resort courses—distinction among equals.

“A course providing lots of fun, character, and options off the tee, on approach, and around the greens. I didn't miss the lack of bunkers."

“This is an outstanding design set on the wild Oregon Coast. So many holes have the Pacific Ocean as the background but the course with its variety of hole layouts, distances, angles of approach, green size and contour and bunkering put this course in a class of its own. Truly, one of Coore and Crenshaw’s masterpieces. A joy to play and a course which engages and holds captive the player from the first tee to the 18th green. Not a long course but with the seasonal winds and varied unique hole layouts this course will test every shot in your repertoire. Certain to be high on one’s bucket list of courses over the years as it continues to mature."

“Overall, a fairly ordinary course in a spectacular setting. The course is shoe-horned in to the smallest area of land of the five Bandon Dunes properties and it shows. There are a few places where the player has to be VERY aware of those around him and, aside from a couple of the oceanside holes (which are spectacular) there's not much that's memorable about the course or the other holes."

“The newest full length course to open at the excellent Bandon Dunes, Sheep Ranch was built on a smaller, exposed property on the northernmost part of the Resort by Coore/Crenshaw in 2020. This is a very interesting course that doesn't feature bunkers and is fairly open and generous off the tee. This course's main defense is the wind, and it is certainly scoreable if you play on a calm day as evidenced by its 121 slope from the Black Tees. Objectively, I'd say this is the least impressive of the five championship layouts at Bandon, but that has more to do with the strength of the other courses than anything to do with Sheep Ranch. The views along the coastline here are spectacular and the course is a special walk and very unique. For higher handicappers, Sheep Ranch will likely be the most "fun" course at the Resort."

“Seems like a flat firm piece of property, makes for a very nice walk! Bunkers are grass."

“Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is located on the western coast of Oregon, 2.5 hours south of Eugene, Oregon and 45 min south of North Bend. There are currently 5 championship courses and two short courses (The Preserve-a 13 hole par 3 course ) and Shorties (a 19 hole par 3 course). This course was originally 13 holes and was renovated and made into an 18 hole course by Coore/Crenshaw(2020). It has spectacular scenery with many views of the Pacific Ocean. There are no bunkers that contain sand, but instead grass bunkers that look like bunkers from the tee. The course plays easy and has minimal trouble, but the wind can be a challenge."

“This might be the windiest golf course in the world, especially considering all 18 holes are exposed."
