Players 2025: Rory McIlroy prepped for a TPC Sawgrass playoff by watching … “The Devil Wears Prada”?

“This is what everyone wants. Everyone wants to be us.”
—Miranda Priestly & Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy was “disappointed” after not closing things out on Sunday and taking home the Players Championship title in 72 holes. And with some weather delays leading to a Monday playoff finish, that meant another overnight stay in a Florida hotel, another handful of hours tossing and turning with a $25 million purse up for grabs and a $4.5 million first-place prize money payout available and more and more what-ifs piling up like golf balls in the water around TPC Sawgrass' island green 17th.

So, McIlroy did what the rest of us are wont to do on a Sunday night, turning on the TV and flipping around until “The Devil Wears Prada” pops up. We’ve all been there, scrolling and scrolling until we eventually see Anne Hathaway's Andy Sachs navigating the high-stress world of fashion journalism, or Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly in the middle of a villainous monologue, and we let the 2006 classic wash over us.

“I would say I was a little disappointed last night, but I also was mindful that I couldn't feel that way, that I needed to reset,” McIlroy acknowledged in his Monday morning press conference after pulling out the victory. “Once I got back to the hotel, I just tried to sort of forget about it and had some room service, watched a little bit of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and went to bed. That was basically it.

“Then when I woke up this morning—I woke up at 3 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep, so I was—I was as nervous as I can remember.”

We’re not entirely sure what section of the movie McIlroy got to watch, but it seems like the unwinding did the trick. He handily won the three-hole aggregate playoff over J.J. Spaun with Miranda Priestly-esque determination.

Hope the Augusta, Ga., rental house has “The Devil Wears Prada” ready to go for the World No. 2. But, with the $4.5 million Players Championship paycheck, McIlroy will have more than enough to splurge if the movie doesn’t happen to be on TBS, and he has to go the on-demand route.
